Reason #3 People Don’t Change Their Story
Randell Mark Olson | April 28, 2014 | 10:12 am | Action, Attitude, Calling, Change | 21 Comments

Reason #3:  Blame

If no one reads this but me, it was still well worth the time to research it and write it because I need this as much as anyone does. BLAME! One of the main reasons that we don’t change our story is because we point blame in every direction except towards ourselves. I call it a visit to the “excuse factory”.no-excuses

Here’s a list of the few I’ve used already this morning:

  • My internet is too slow
  • The right side of my back is sore
  • I don’t have the resources for a better website
  • I’m out of paper for the printer
  • I lost my train of thought because the power company meter reader just walked past my office window
  • Oh, here’s a monkey wrench…while I was writing this list I just received a phone call with a job offer – one more thing to think about.

All This Blame is making me  feel better already, it’s no wonder my story’s not changing with all of these obstacles and distractions…it’s not my fault after all. That statement sums up why we blame everything under the sun for our lack of progress, because it takes the pressure off “US”. We can’t feel guilty about not getting things done if our internet is too slow, we have a sore back, or our website is not up to par. If the phone is ringing, the printer is out of paper and someone walks past our window distracting our brilliant mind from producing ground breaking content that will change the world…Its Not My Fault!

Blame steals our power

Here lies the problem with blame, we can’t control all of those things, so if all of those things are the reason we’re stuck, we’ll stay stuck forever. If we allow those things to determine our future then we’ve given away our power to change. We need to realize that we are responsible for our current situation, and if we’re responsible for it, then we also have the power to change it.

In his book Mastering The Seven Decisions, author Andy Andrews says…”Responsibility is about hope and control…If where you are today is not in your control, then how can tomorrows fait be better”

Shorten the list

The best way we can start Changing our Story is to scratch Blame off the list by taking responsibility. Blame makes us weak and hopeless to change, but Responsibility gives us hope for our future, and the power to take action…to quote Andy Andrews again…”You cannot let your history control your destiny”

Let’s claim the power of our decisions and Change our Story, When We Change Our Story, We Change Our World!

A New Chapter!
Randell Mark Olson | March 20, 2014 | 10:09 am | Attitude, Authenticity, Calling, Change | 4 Comments

Take a Deep Breath, and then start writing the next Chapter100_4422

We’re all writing a book, making a movie or creating a play…we may not have a title, outlines, credits, or a table of contents, but new chapters and scenes are being written every single day, and the most exciting part is that it’s a true story. It’s a true story, because it’s your story…It’s Your Life Story!

I almost hesitate to offer this quote because it’s been used so often, but Shakespeare knew what he was talking about when he said “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are merely players”…he was right! Everything we do is a permanent scene in the story of our life, and it will have permanent impact on someone else.

Have your ever read a great story, or watched a movie that impacted you so much that you couldn’t get it out of your mind? Has a particular story actually changed your perspective, or maybe even changed your life?… What if each of our stories are suppose to do Just That…Change Someone’s Life. I mean, when you think about it, why are each one of us living our stories anyway, other than to impact, influence, and relate to other people. I don’t know about you, but when I think of my actions that way, it makes me want to think twice about what I say, how I act, or even the expression on my face, after all…I could change someone’s life.

As I have made a major life change in the past 3 days, I’ve been reminded that we are always having impact. When you move from one chapter to another chapter, people will tell you things about your impact on them that they would never say during the course of your relationship otherwise, it’s almost like they’re at your funeral saying good-bye…it’s kind of un-settling actually.

As I begin this new chapter in my story, I am very aware that I am the author…I’m not in control of what happens to me, be I am in complete control of how I respond to events, circumstances, and the people in my story. I plan to be very Intentional about the impact I have on everyone I interact with. Like many of you, I am in the process of Changing My Story, and when You Change Your Story…You Change Your World!

GO AHEAD…CHANGE YOUR STORY!
Randell Mark Olson | November 1, 2012 | 2:30 pm | Action, Calling, Change, Inspiration, Legacy | 2 Comments

Who is writing Your Story?

If you do not like the Story you’re living…It’s time to sit down with the Author and have a “Heart to Heart” Chat. Who’s the Author of Your Story…YOU! That should be Great news for all of us to hear, because if we’re the Authors of our own story, Then we can change it to read any way we want it to.

One of my favorite Peanut’s Cartoon Clips is when Charlie Brown is complaining to Linus about how his lunch is the same everyday, and he hates it. Then Linus asks him…“Who makes your lunch?’ Charlie Brown answers…“I Do” . It seems so ridiculously obvious to us that Charlie Brown is in complete control of what he puts in his lunch, he could enjoy something different everyday if he really wanted to change.

But, What about each one of us? Aren’t we the ones in control of our own Story? We’ve all heard the definition of Insanity, which is: “Continuing to do the same thing over and over, and expecting different results”  I don’t know about you, but I want different results… I Want To Change My Story!

How Do We Change Our Story?

The first step is to begin with the end in mind. In Steven Covey’s Ground Breaking best selling book, The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, Habit #2 is:  Begin With The End In Mind. Essentially, Dr. Covey says that we will never create the reality of the life we want to live, until we first create it in our mind.

We must be able to visualize the life we want to live. Think about where you want to live, what will your income level be, how will you impact your community, how will your influence impact your children, what will you do vocationally, what kind of marriage do you want, and what will your legacy be? Changing your Story will probably  not begin with Chapter 1. When you Change Your Story, it doesn’t mean that you erase everything from your past and start over, it’s more of a pivoting point in your life when you decide it’s time to live the life you were born to live.

Every Good Story…

Every good Story reaches a point when everything changes. Once we can see the life we want to live, we need to understand what needs to happen for our vision to become a reality. We need to ask ourselves some more questions: What kind of husband do I need to be in order to have the kind of marriage I want? What activities can I do with my kids to make sure I am having a positive impact on their lives? How will I get into the career field that fits my personality, skills, and my passion? and what needs to change in my finances to be free to live the life I truly desire?

Asking these questions will put us on a path towards Changing Our Story.

The Action Scene!

Stories never change without Action! I have spent more than enough time envisioning the life I want to live, I have even devoted countless hours asking and answering the questions we just talked about, but I often find myself paralyzed when it’s time to take Action. Dreaming, Thinking, and Planning are all very necessary components to Changing Your Story, but they don’t mean much until you do something.

The approach that has finally been working for me is: Small Action Steps Are Better Than No Action Steps. In other words, start small. Pick one small thing that you can do in each of the major roles in your life…and Take Action!!! If you start today with a few simple action items you will begin to pickup momentum and feel more inspired to Change Your Story.

Today is the Best day to start to Change Your Story, and begin being more Intentional about Your Legacy.

Blessings,

Randell

The Currency Of Time
Randell Mark Olson | August 7, 2012 | 11:05 am | Business Development, Change, Personal Development, Public Speaking, Smarter Business | No comments

Have you ever thought of time as currency? In many ways that is exactly what it is, especially if you are paid by how much time you spend working. If you are trading your time for money then in a very real sense time is currency.  The reality is that you are actually purchasing dollars with your time. The problem with this arrangement is that you only have just so much time, obviously when you run out of time your opportunity to purchase more money then vanishes as well.

Following this logic, is wealth measured in time then or measured in dollars… I would suggest neither is an appropriate measurement of wealth. Wealth can be best measured by the value your time creates for you or someone else. For example:   If I am hired to give a speech for $1100, and I invest 10 hours researching and writing my speech, and one hour actually delivering my speech, you could say I just earned $100 per hour. However the wealth does not stop there, assuming the content of my speech added value to those listening, the potential wealth continues on with each person in attendance. To take this one step further, if I take that same speech and put it on a CD and offer it for sale, the potential income for me and the potential added value for anyone who purchased the CD for all practical purposes is infinite.

At the beginning of each year, at the beginning of each month, at the beginning of each week, and at the beginning of each day, we all start with the same amount of time. Each of us has a choice whether to spend our time purchasing dollars, or invest our time creating value for ourselves and others.

By investing our time in Personal Development and People Development we can change our world and be more Intentional about our Legacy.

I HEARD THIS PHRASE IN 1982
Randell Mark Olson | June 2, 2012 | 12:59 pm | Action, Attitude, Calling, Change, Entrepreneurship, Inspiration, Legacy, Moments Of Greatness, Motivation | 3 Comments

“Being Moderate Is Boring…Full Effort Is Fun”!!!

I first heard that phrase from a cassette tape in 1982 from leadership expert and keynote speaker Bob Goshen. Although I have not consistently lived by that principle it continues to roll through my mind still 30 years later.

Who really wants to be moderate anyway? Nobody is” turned on” by somebody or something that is just moderate.  Living only a few miles from Lake Michigan, my wife and I often enjoy sitting on the pier watching the boats come in and out of the channel heading out to the big lake. While the boats are in the channel they are in a “no wake zone“, this means they float at an idle speed leaving no wake behind the boat. The real fun begins when they get past the end of the pier, without exception every boat goes full throttle. It’s as though the real ride doesn’t even begin until they are at full throttle.

Our lives are no different than the boats in the channel, if we are living moderate lives it’s as though we are in the “no wake zone“. I don’t know about you, but I want my life to be leaving a wake, a positive wake. I want to make a positive difference in this world and it will never happen being moderate. Being moderate is boring, being moderate is in effective, being moderate is dangerous, and being moderate leaves no wake…FULL EFFORT IS FUN, and FULL EFFORT changes everything.

I was listening to an Andy Andrews Podcast recently where Andy was interviewing Christian comedian Ken Davis. Ken made an awesome statement about how he wants to finish his life here on earth. He said “I want to cross the finish line with my chest pushed out as far as possible“…out of breath…FULL EFFORT!!! I agree with Ken Davis, I don’t want to stroll across the finish line, I want to cross it wide open, completely “Spent”…as Zig Ziglar says, physically exhausted, but emotionally exhilarated

It’s time we get out of the channel, leave a WAKE, and have some FUN… Let’s go FULL THROTTLE  being Intentional about our Legacy!!!

Blessings,

~Randell

GROW YOUR BUSINESS AND DO MORE OF WHAT YOU HATE?
Randell Mark Olson | March 13, 2012 | 7:55 pm | Authenticity, Calling, Change, Entrepreneurship, Uniqueness | 2 Comments

Believe It Or Not…It Can Happen

I was talking to a friend of mine just the other day and I was telling him about some of the new strategies I was planning on using to market my business. Now this friend also owns his own business as well so what he said next really struck me, he said this. “So you are growing your business to do more of what you hate”

I was blown away, I said to him immediately, no I am growing my business to do more of what I love. I told him, that I can’t wait to be able to share the message I have with more and more people, and help others realize that work doesn’t have to be a chore, work doesn’t need to be something we hate, but rather our work should be a reflection of who we truly are and what we were born to do.

The Sad Reality

The sad truth is, that whether you are an employee or an entrepreneur,  if you hate your work it is impossible to live a full life.   How can a person spend 50 or 60% of their waking hours doing something that they hate and truly be alive. I don’t think it is possible, but the real question is this.  If you are not living fully alive, who then is missing out on the real you? Who is being robbed of your real personality, your passions, your dreams, your values. Who is missing out on your talents, your skills, and your abilities. I think it’s really quite simply everybody. The world is missing out on the real you, and you are missing the joy of living a full and abundant life, the life that you were born to live.

If YOU Hate Your Work

If you’re an employee who hates his job, or if you’re a worn out, beat up, overwhelmed, and overworked entrepreneur, it’s time to Get Your Life Back. It’s time to discover who you are, and why you’re here.  It’s time to once again experience Joy, Confidence, Freedom, and a Great Smile to share with the world.

What Now?

If you want to talk about it, I’d love to chat with you at no charge Click Here and drop me a note…We’ll jump on the phone and chat for a while.

I’ve got the bounce back in my step, and you can too!

Blessings,

Randell

Wanna Run From Your Business?…Sorry It Won’t Work!

You Can’t Outrun It Anyhow!

Have you ever watched a cartoon chase? You know the ones I’m talking about, where one character is chasing the other, and the first one goes around a corner and quickly slips, unnoticed  into a doorway while the chaser dashes past and keeps running down the hall.  You can almost sense the first ones relief while he sits there trying to catch his breath, and planning his next move.

As a small business owner, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to just run away from my business, or at least hide from it long enough to plan my next move.  I would think to myself…if I could just get far enough ahead to Think, to Breath, to Rest, and figure out what to do next.

The business I thought was my Dream, was now more like a Prison. It wasn’t like being between a rock and a hard place, at least there you know where you’re at.  This was worse, because it was like being nowhere at all.  Sounds kind of strange, but the fact is that I didn’t know where I was going, and really didn’t know how I even ended up where I was.

If You’re Still Reading This, You’ve Been There Too

The problem is,  if we don’t address it, we’ll sabotage our business, and likely ourselves as well. I fought this battle on and off for years, only to realize that the business itself wasn’t really the problem, it had more to do with me.  I had to face the fact that I needed to take a good hard look inside of myself, and it was the best thing I’ve ever done.

The Path To Getting Your Life Back

The first step towards living completely alive is getting to know yourself.  You have to ask yourself why you went into this business in the first place.  Was it just to make an income, or did you have a dream that was bigger than just money.

If you had a dream that was bigger than money, chances are you can recapture that vision,  re-ignite that passion, and begin to experience real joy in your business again.

However, if money was the driving force for  your business start up, it is also probably what is driving your frustration.  You see to stay the course through thick and thin it takes a stronger passion than money. You may discover that you have no passion for your business at all, and it’s time to make a change, remember it starts by looking inward to clarify your strongest passions, and deepest desires.

If you can start your business from there, you will change your world and leave a Legacy of Greatness!

My good friend Rob Clinton and I have been working together for several months now on a particular project called IPO 2 Greatness. We are extremely excited about it! IPO 2 Greatness will begin with a podcast this year prior to releasing the actual book. In the meantime, you will be entertained with its rich content over the air and the interviews from other people who have achieved a level of fulfillment through greatness in their lives. Joining the podcast, you will have the opportunity to download our actual first inspirational book release which comes out this summer entitled, “Stop Working and Start Creating”.

Basically, we’ve discovered a way to make your journey through this life much simpler. Life is still challenging, but we’ve learned how to leverage that, to use those challenges to our benefit. We’ve discovered that anyone can lead a successful life starting right from where they are right now, but it’s going to take that shift in perception using a very strategic method for uncovering your greatness.

Anyone can achieve greatness! I don’t care who you, or where you’ve come from. The opportunity to make your life sing is now, and we’re going to help you get there. Better yet, once you understand something that we want to teach you, you will be so fired up with a joy that surpasses all understanding to start going after life like you deserve it!

What’s Changed In The Last 12 Months?

Let me tell you about my last 12 months…I’ll try not to bore you, but this has been an absolute “Turn-Around Year” for me!

12 Months ago I was a frustrated entrepreneur, who was struggling in business, I had lost my passion, and I felt like I was beginning to destroy my Legacy.  I was walking around on edge most of the time, and little things that used to just roll  like water off a duck’s back, would cause me to react rather harshly.

Don’t get me wrong, I was not pacing around in a fit of rage all of the time, just rather testy, and quick to blame people and circumstances for my current situation.  Quite honestly I had a “Stinky attitude”…Zig Ziglar would call it “Stinken Thinken”

Today?…

Today I still have that business that is struggling…But I also have a brand new business and a brand new Attitude, with a Passion and Desire to help other Entrepreneurs who are struggling the way I was.  Today through my coaching, and speaking I share a message of hope and inspiration that there is a brighter tomorrow, regardless of how things look today.  Today I wake up with a feeling of purpose, knowing my creator has a plan for me, and it’s my responsibility to discover and live it out.  I literally have a brand new life…you might say that I’m beginning to “Live My Best Life” and finally being “Intentional about my Legacy”.

So What Really Happened?

As I look back, I can identify 3 distinct reasons for my Turn Around Year”.

  1. I Drew A Line: I said this is it, something has to change, and I  made a “Decision” to change my course.  I recognized that I was not living the life I was created to live, I decided it was time to start living a life of real purpose.
  2. I Invested In Myself: I went through coaching programs, and seminars.  I invested in  training courses, as well as joining a ToastMasters group.  I connected with people who had already achieved great levels of success in helping others reach their potential.
  3. I Took Action: I actually did something.  I stopped just thinking about it, and did it. I launched a brand new company “The Intentional Legacy Group, LLC. I have volunteered to speak this new message of hope.  I have offered assistance to other small business owners who are struggling with the same issues I was.  I am being Intentional about my Legacy.  When it’s all said and done, taking action is what ultimately has impact, and will change the lives of the people you serve.

What A Difference 12 Months Can Make…

Try it for yourself…Draw a line in the sand, and make a decision, choose to change your life, and your world.  Invest in yourself, so you are prepared to help others.  Then take Action.  Step out of your comfort zone, and reach out to serve humanity.

I’ll be the first to tell you that my life is far from perfect, but it is a “Life Of Purpose”. I am on a path towards “Living My Best Life”, and being  Intentional about my Legacy… I can’t wait to see what tomorrow has is store!
